Tangled Up in Blue
I admit to occasionally feeling somewhat melancholy. These episodes usually involve reminiscing about the Navy or missing military buddies. This week wasn't different in that respect.
But my funk wasn't limited to missing the Navy.
My son and youngest child has decided to attend public school. We've homeschooled him since 1st grade. I'm all for it. I'm enthusiastic about it...for his sake and for his future. He's thinking about a career in the military. As a former recruiter I know that's it's nary impossible for homeschoolers to qualify without a diploma from a public school. The school he chose has a JROTC etc.

It also means the house will be eerily quieter and it portends things to come. I felt the same way when my oldest got married and when the middle child graduated from high school. I'm sure it'll pass. I rarely feel blue for long.

BUT this is the last child. I thought I'd be more excited about being an empty nester. Maybe in time I will be. I just need to savor these days, they're getting shorter and fewer.
I'm glad that he's becoming his own person.
I'm missing him already.

riff...I looked into the National Guard but I'd have to give up my retirement and work will not allow time off for para military groups...

Try this one on for size: The present is why there was a past.

ElBro, not sure what to say, other than to listen. You're a wonderful father and husband, and the future holds MUCH joy. But I think it's only natural to grieve the past sometimes.
Hey, I think the fact that you're not ECSTATIC about the empty nest at the moment means that you have wonderful kids, right? Had they been punks...you'd be shovin' them out the door. ;p
...I see my babes growing up before my very eyes....

Congratulations and condolences at the same time. The future sounds exciting for your son, but I hear you about the change to an empty nest. I think that will be quite hard for me when I get there too.
