For Annie Oakley

and in honor of the Supreme Court's decision on the DC gun ban

To be honest I like Geoff Moore's version (click on the song to hear a portion of Geoff's version) of this song better, his version came out in 1999, but isn't on Youtube. The Rascal Flatts version came out in 2004. Writers Bobby Boyd, Jeff Hanna, Marcus Hummon won a Nashville Songwriters award in 2005 for this song. Hanna is a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Those who have recorded this song inlcude:

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Melodie Crittenden
Marcus Hummon (1994)
Geoff Moore (1999)
Rascal Flatts (2004)
Selah (2006)

On a personal note...I once called my wife from Indonesia on our anniversery in 2000 and read the lyrics to her.

  1. I didn't realize how much mileage that song actually had on it. Thanks for the history behind that great song.

  2. I didn't either fj....I had Geoff Moore's album with the song on it and assumed he had been the first to record it.

  3. There's this part of the song Boondock by Little Bigtown that goes... you get a line, I'll get a pole, we'll go fishin' in the crawfish hole. Turns out THAT came from an old, old song called the Crawdad song from over a hundred years ago...

  4. I've heard the Crawdad song before FJ. I think it was on The Incredible Mr. Limpet...Mr. Limpet's friend the crawdad sang it with a stutter

  5. EB, Could you remind me in the future:
When I find the One and am working on my wedding vows I want to sing this song for Her. And if you make it to the wedding you could play guitar.
It has been a long broken road and I'm sure there are a few more ruts in it before that time comes.
A second would be, "Thank God for Unanswered Prayers"
