Preparing to be a Dad Again

@ 03:59 AM (17 months, 27 days ago)

My oldest daughter is getting married in about 5 weeks. I've run the gamut of emotions. Extreme happiness (I'm gaining an office), joy, sadness....to be honest I am thrilled. Our future son in law is uber responsible...owns two homes...has a great job and most of all he loves my daughter. He's a Christian too which was at the top of the list.

I have also felt a sense of relief. I was the bad cop...my wife the good cop...and frankly I was getting tired of it. My relief comes in the form of now being more her Dad than her father. I am enjoying who she is and I can stop being concerned about stuff that doesn't matter.

I'm looking forward to having another son. Her fiance and I have completed at least one project together at their new home. It was fun and we got along great. I admit that making myself think of him as a SON will take some time but I believe I will enjoy it.

I'm looking forward to seeing my daughter mature and be a virtuous wife. Both her and her fiance knew what they were looking for in a spouse and when they found it they stopped looking. At first this sort of took me aback but then I realized I had done the same thing when I met Mrs. EB.

Life is starting to make a full circle and while mine isn't quite closed yet the prospects of getting older, having grandchildren etc. doesn't seem so bad.

Now if it didn't hurt so much to climb those stairs....

update: I've added the song Kite by U2...it's about Bono's kid growing up...thought it appropriate

  1. Life doesn't come in single emotions, and sometimes they just pile up in a heap, and like spagetti, are impossible to untangle!
Congratulations on this new stage in life, enjoy it!

  2. Grandkids are always a perk... And as long as your daughter is getting married to a great guy, you have nothing to worry about.

Really, it's a testament to your parenting, that she want a man like her father, rather than some irresponisble P.O.C.

  3. I'm glad I still have a few years to go before I have to worry about who my daughter is dating and all the rest that goes along with that.
My guess is that your daughter learned responsibility from her parents and now you have to trust her to make the right decisions.
From what you said about her husband to be, it sounds like she has already made one.
How much does it cost to put on a wedding these days?

  4. you're right tmw sometimes they come in a heap....more like a dogpile if you ask me

Brooke - it's more a testament to their mother and to the Lord...I was gone a good portion

AC - I told my daughter I had X amount of dollars and she had to stay in budget but to give you an idea the closest place to get married around here was about $7500 before they charge you for each table, chair, tablecloth etc.

    it's not cheap

  7. I envy you eb... mine's still a college freshman.

    Tim McGraw, My Little Girl

Gotta hold on easy as I let you go
Going to tell you how much I love you
though you think you already know
I remember I thought you looked like angel wrapped in pink so soft and warm
you've had me wrapped around your finger since the day you were born

    [Chorus]
Beautiful baby from the outside in
chase your dreams but always know the road that will lead you home again
go on, take on this old world but to me you know you'll always be my little girl

When you were in trouble that crooked little smile could melt my heart of stone
    now look at you
I've turned around and you've almost grown
sometimes when you're alseep I whisper I love you in the moonlight at your door
as I walk away I hear you say "Daddy, love you more"

    {Chorus}

Someday some boy will come and ask me for your hand
but I wont' say yes to him unless I know he's the half that makes you whole
    he has a boy's soul
and the heart of a man's man
I know he'll say that he's in love but between you and me he won't be good enough

    [Chorus}

fj - my youngest daughter loves that song by Tim Mcgraw

  9. it makes me weepy to hear about a decent Christian father and mom who've raised a decent CHristian daughter who's met a decent Christian man. Well...you get the picture!!

It's so rare these days, it makes me well up.

Congratulations, Elmer's brother.....may God richly bless them in their marriage.........and may God bless you and Mrs. EB for raising a girl this wise. My sis has 3 kids and says she has prayed since the eldest (now 24) was born..'Dear God, somewhere, somehow, have a family raising a child worthy of my blessed child.."

I wish all parents could be as rightfully proud and hopeful of the future as you are. As I said, God bless you all.

  12. Congrats!!! What a great way of saying you are 'passing the wand' to her husband and respect their new unity. Some parents think they have to compete for their kids affection. Love is limitless.

But remember the old adage: "A son is a son until he takes a wife. A daughter is a daughter for the rest of her life."

  17. Fantastic news EB. You left out the part about the guy getting a wonderful set of inlaws. A suggestion: have the wedding in Mexico to save some dinero. The grand finale can be a giant pinata filled with Tom Tancredo for President buttons.
