Well don't get too comfy EB. When we get hit again by the muslim fanatics I'm sure they'll be giving you a call-up. My brother-in-law lost his job in the Air Force due to downsizing (go figure--he was a Captain) but he's still in the reserve for 4 years. I'm just wondering if they'd take an old fart like me at 30?

I know the feeling. After seven years, I left the Coast Guard to get my Master's Degree in Education. Now those friends who stayed in are reaching retirement age. I would have 24 years in if I had stayed. When I left, I was ready to get out but I often wonder if I made the right decision. It's hard to explain but standing watch at 4 a.m. at sea is one of the things I missed most.

It was the moon and it rising. I can't adequately describe the setting or the feeling, but nobody can take that away from me.

I'm sure they miss you as well, you helped lay a foundation for brothers currently there.

Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee
He said he wanted to settle down
And let me be his girl
But first he had to do a little travelin' around
And see the whole wide world
That's why I'm ..
Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee
I got a letter yesterday from Tokyo
And a souvenir
A walky-talky wind-up little China doll
That says "Wish you were here"
Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee
He's comin' home to see me on a weekend pass
A forty-eight hour day-ate
That boat he's sailin' on just better get here fast
'cause I can hardly wait
Till then I'm ..
Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

It was a mercy killing. Actually, he tripped into a rabbit hole and broke a leg. I had to do it (even though I had dug the rabbit hole myself). He has some great ideas on Africa. I think I'll try and work on a "southern strategy" to compliment ongoing ops in Somalia/ Ethiopia as prelude to Sudan, et al.

Do you keep up with any of your old shipmates? I have a couple that I've kept up with. We are planning a reunion at Coast Guard-based Miami Beach in 2008. Still a long way away, but...

...with the current administration at longrange in turmoil, all we need to do is go for the throat and I've got a feelin' you'll get that storm door AND a bag of trail mix!
The caesars always had to pay off the praetorians. Why should we make an exception now?

Mr. Elmers Brother: NOW you're making me homesick!
I often feel the same way, but then I think about how they just kicked me to the curb without a second thought. I thought that I was doing all this important stuff, that I was helping somehow. But it was fiction, just my hopes and (mis)perceptions. I know that it was different for you. I always tell everybody that each person's experiences are completely different. I'm glad that yours was good. I certainly don't regret doing it at all. It improved my life in many ways, mainly teaching me about people.
I miss my friends, the travel, and my perceptions. Whoever said that you can't go home got it right. Let's stop at the fuel pier and get a soda and talk about the fun that we had. :^)
