  7. Well don't get too comfy EB. When we get hit again by the muslim fanatics I'm sure they'll be giving you a call-up. My brother-in-law lost his job in the Air Force due to downsizing (go figure--he was a Captain) but he's still in the reserve for 4 years. I'm just wondering if they'd take an old fart like me at 30?

    Comment by Florian— 2007/01/18 @ 04:44 PM — (Reply)

  8. 30 is not problem flo I used to be a recruiter...alas the early 40's are pushing it.

  11. I know the feeling. After seven years, I left the Coast Guard to get my Master's Degree in Education. Now those friends who stayed in are reaching retirement age. I would have 24 years in if I had stayed. When I left, I was ready to get out but I often wonder if I made the right decision. It's hard to explain but standing watch at 4 a.m. at sea is one of the things I missed most.

Comment by American Crusader— 2007/01/19 @ 01:37 AM — (Reply)

  12. YOU ARE SO RIGHT ON AC. I miss that too. I remember being in the Malaccan(sp?) Straits one time and there was this orange object on the horizon. It was at night and it's very busy there with ship traffic. I was on the flight deck and thought perhaps it was a ship on fire and wondering when we were going to go and render aid. I sat there transfixed.

It was the moon and it rising. I can't adequately describe the setting or the feeling, but nobody can take that away from me.

  13. I'm sure they miss you as well, you helped lay a foundation for brothers currently there.

  14. Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
    And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

He said he wanted to settle down
And let me be his girl
But first he had to do a little travelin' around
And see the whole wide world

    That's why I'm ..
Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
    And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

I got a letter yesterday from Tokyo
    And a souvenir
    A walky-talky wind-up little China doll
That says "Wish you were here"

Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
    And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

He's comin' home to see me on a weekend pass
    A forty-eight hour day-ate
That boat he's sailin' on just better get here fast
    'cause I can hardly wait

    Till then I'm ..
Blue, navy blue, I'm as blue as I can be
'cause my steady boy said "Ship ahoy"
    And joined the Nay-ee-ay-vee

  18. It was a mercy killing. Actually, he tripped into a rabbit hole and broke a leg. I had to do it (even though I had dug the rabbit hole myself). He has some great ideas on Africa. I think I'll try and work on a "southern strategy" to compliment ongoing ops in Somalia/ Ethiopia as prelude to Sudan, et al.

  23. Hey buddy....take the family on a cruise...great internet deals...of course it won't be exactly like the Navy...but maybe with the family, the salt air, the huge ship, it could be nostalgic, fun.

Look up some of you Navy pals and reconnect.

Comment by Elmers Brother— 2007/01/31 @ 06:58 AM — (Reply)

  57. Mr. Elmers Brother: NOW you're making me homesick!
I often feel the same way, but then I think about how they just kicked me to the curb without a second thought. I thought that I was doing all this important stuff, that I was helping somehow. But it was fiction, just my hopes and (mis)perceptions. I know that it was different for you. I always tell everybody that each person's experiences are completely different. I'm glad that yours was good. I certainly don't regret doing it at all. It improved my life in many ways, mainly teaching me about people.
I miss my friends, the travel, and my perceptions. Whoever said that you can't go home got it right. Let's stop at the fuel pier and get a soda and talk about the fun that we had. :^)
