Going out of Business - the sooner the better I say
The liberals are working hard to save the morally and financially bankrupt Air America. Have a look see.

From the linked article:
As Mr. Beamish might say, "More proof that leftists don't have an orignal thought. As if more proof were needed."
BTW, the article fails to mention that Sinatra switched to the Republican Party.

We Sinatra fans remember the switch when Reagan ran for office.

And the claim that the talent wasn't hurting them... HAHAHAHAHAHA! Did anyone hear that horrible little stint that Alec Baldwin did on Air America after trashing Hannity and claiming that even a hack could do his job?

When all my teenaged friends were listening to the Beatles, I was discovering Ol' Blue Eyes. He certainly had a checkered life, but his ability to turn a musical phrase was unique.
I saw Sinatra live in his later years twice; the dates were 1981 and 1988, I think. The pipes weren't as good, but the stage presence was something to see. He could work a bit arena as if it were a piano bar. My husband didn't want to go to the first concert, but I dragged him anyway. The second time, my hubby clamored to go.
Sorry, EB, for rambling on about Sinatra.

What a shame. You mean after they 'borrowed with no thought of returning' the money from the children in NYC, they are going belly-up? I guess it's true. What goes around DOES come around!

Dean Martin was apolitical and following Sinatra's lead when it came to politics. Above all, Dino loved to have fun, but not at someone else's expense.

My husband and I are diehard fans of Dean Martin. A few years ago, we went to Steubenville for Dean Martin Day. Good times, with one excellent inpersonator (Tom Stevens)!
I miss those Dean Martin Roasts.

Some of them had a buzz on, but at least they weren't driving home.
Today, such roasts would be too "insensitive."

Yes, along those lines. I seem to remember that some in the media didn't like GWB's sense of humor and thought portions were insensitive--or something.

My dad's family is from Steubenville and Dean Martin was idolized by all. I liked his variety show as well. I just finished Jerry Lewis' book about him and Dino. My kids and enjoy the Lewis and Martin movies.

EB,
We've been to Steubenville at least three times. Best Italian food I've ever had! The restaurant was Naples something, and had photos of all sorts of celebrities who have eaten there: Dino, Perry Como, Sly Stallone, Robert DeNiro, Frank Sinatra, and more.
I've read Jerry Lewis's book as well. I've also listened to the audio version, which is available at my public library; the audio version has a reader with a voice able to do a bit of imitating.
Dean Martin's son, Ricci Martin, wrote an excellent book from the family perspective. I didn't much care for Deanna's book. She needed some style revision and a better proofer.
I think that my favorite Dean Martin movie might be The Sons of Katie Elder. I've seen it countless times. And the music is by Elmer Bernstein.
Here I go, rambling again.

Barry,
I'm not sure if that's the one I was thinking of. I was thinking of the one where he was looking for the WMD's.
GWB has a great sense of humor, I think. Of course, the gravity of the times we live in doesn't allow for much humor from POTUS.

Re: the President. It is amazing how the past week's events have proven him right despite what the New York Times says.
Comment by Barry G.— 2006/07/17 @ 04:16 PM — (Reply)
Yes, Rio Bravo--that's a goodie. A later version was made with Robert Mitchum as the town drunk. El Dorado?
As to the Treason Times (aka NYT), I ignore the publication. And to think it once was THE newspaper in the East!
Looks as though we've hijacked EB's posting into a fan-club discussion.

No worries. I have Rio Bravo and The Sons of Katie Elder on DVD. We also have several Lewis and Martin DVD's. The Stooge, At War With the Army.
I was surprised a few weeks ago when I went to the local Walmart and they had tons of John Wayne movies for $5.50 a piece. I got 10 of them. I already had Rio Bravo.
AoW - My cousin that is visiting Brian, his grandmother (my aunt lives in Steubenville and Brian lives in a little town not far from there. While I was a kid we didn't like to go visiting there because the steel mills across the river made the place stink and it was dirty. (My grandfather retired from Weirton Steel). It's a much cleaner place now that a lot of the mills have gone out of business.
Dean Martin also was quite a generous man. The Catholic Church runs an orphanage in my hometown in Ohio. He helped to build it.

In addition to the funding you mentioned, Dean Martin's estate also chooses at least one music student from the Steubenville area for a scholarship. Dean, of course, never had much musical training, but he saw to it that his children did.
EB,
You have the movies. I have the albums--the old vinyl ones. I think I've got every album he ever released.
As to the recently written book by Jerry Lewis, he states that Dean's timing was unique. "No counting of beats" needed. As a straight man, he was without equal, IMO.

Hey! Wait for me. I didn't know we were discussing Dean Martin. I LOVE him. I don't remember a cross word coming from him. He was always ready with a quib. My Mom loves him as well. Those were the days, eh? That is when they knew how to make you laugh without using any cuss words. Are we so different now, or is it the lack of talent? ;)

Rosemary,
And he exuded pure sexiness, too. Good thing he had a vasectomy, huh?
He was also proud to be an American. Paraphrase here: "Uncle Sam has done so much for me that I don't complain about my taxes."
Last time we were in LA, we looked up his grave. He's buried in Westwood Cemetery, right across the street from Los Angeles National Cemetery, where his son Dean Paul is buried. Dean is buried in the same cemetery as Marilyn Monroe; his headstone (not exactly--it's a mauseoleum) reads "Everybody Loves Somebody." When we visited there, fresh flowers were in place. Jeannie?
Dean Martin was one of a kind. I miss him.

EB,
All these comments. Are we hankering for better and simpler times? I think so.
Comment by Always On Watch— 2006/07/18 @ 02:43 PM — (Reply)
AoW - there were some good things about those times, certainly and Dean Martin was one of them.
I read Kitty Kelly's unauthorized bio of Sinatra and she was pretty harsh on the man, not sure if it was true or not and I read Sammy Davis Jr's autobiography. It was interesting. Some people don't know that at one point he dabbled in the occult.
Talk to me coo coo!
