My pet progressive Shalana thinks that all we have to do to ward off the terrorists is to have meetings....and I quote:

"Remember, the general American public was not aware of the Millenium threat. The Clinton administration did what it had to do, protecting the American public.

The "principles" were required to go to daily meetings at the White House, to exchange information. And they took that information back into their departments.

Had they NOT done that, it is unlikely the agent would have been on alert."

Dems Once Opposed Saddam

@ 12:32 PM (30 months, 7 days ago)

The Republican National Committee has an excellent video--here--with clips of various Democrats, during both the Clinton and Bush administrations, arguing about the menace that Saddam Hussein posed. With most Democrats now claiming that they would have been on Saddam's side all along if only that evil genius George W. Bush, that idiot, hadn't led them astray, it's worth reviewing. It's especially hard to credit the notion that BUSH LIED!!!! and fooled Madeleine Albright, Bill Clinton and Sandy Berger all the way back in 1998.

Michael Barone notes:

The Democrats who are peddling the Big Lie of "Bush lied" are doing so either (a) deliberately to injure the cause of the United States and of freedom in the world or, as I think, (b) with reckless disregard of whether they injure the cause of the United States and of freedom in the world. What they are doing may suit their political needs, but it hurts our country.

It's hard to see, though, how the Dems' retrospective pro-Saddam position suits their political needs, other than the need to appease the Angry Left base, a portion of the party that arguably is aiming for.

Inspirational update for Veterans Day. Here is an update to this story at Blackfive. This prayer from the comments section meant a lot to me..

(bold letters my emphasis)

oh God! Help us to understand this. Help these families with this grief that must be crushing. Give them your peace that surpasses all understanding. Make me a better man everyday, so that I might honor this selfless sacrifice by being worthy of it as a citizen of this great nation. Give our leaders your wisdom, give our warriors your undaunted courage in the face of these enemies, give our fellow Americans the fortitude to see this action through to the end. Lift up these heroes in honored glory in Heaven, and let us never forget the countless sacrifices they have made to preserve this precious gift of liberty that you have given us here in this nation.
Amen....and Amen.

France is going to deport foreigners caught rioting. Can we do that with all the lefties...er uh I mean "progressives??" here? We could ship'em to France where they would feel right at home. This should guarantee the white flag from the French. Trouble is they would probably start whining about the price of car insurance instead of the price of gas. Can you imagine the CEO of "Progressive" insurance in front of the French parliament...Mr. Chairman we have no control over the price of insurance....

We could also take this to the U.N., I mean shouldn't we have a consensus from the world body before France can go and treat it's minorities like this.

From Opinion Journal

Something very puzzling is happening in France, the New York Times reports:

The number of attacks decreased sharply overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. There were 617 arson attacks on cars, down from more than 1,100 the previous night, Interior Ministry figures showed. Incidents were reported in 116 towns, compared with 226 the night before.

A Salute to Veterans Everywhere

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Americans owe a great debt of gratitude to those who have sacrificed for our liberty and for the security of our Nation. We express deep appreciation to our veterans -- the men and women who stepped forward when America needed them, triumphed over brutal enemies, liberated continents, and answered the prayers of millions around the globe.

From the beaches of Normandy and the snows of Korea to the mountains of Afghanistan and the deserts of Iraq, our courageous veterans have sacrificed so that Americans and others could live in freedom. As we mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II this year, we remember the millions of veterans who crossed oceans and defeated two of the most ruthless military forces the world has ever known. The freedom that the children and grandchildren of these veterans now enjoy is a monument to their fallen comrades and the generations of patriots who have served our country.

Through their commitment to freedom, America 's veterans have lifted millions of lives and made our country and the world more secure. They have demonstrated to us that freedom is the mightiest force on Earth. We resolve that their sacrifices will always be remembered by a grateful Nation.

With respect for and in recognition of the contributions our service men and women have made to the cause of peace and freedom around the world, the Congress has provided (5 U.S.C. 6103(a)) that November 11 of each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honor veterans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2005, as Veterans Day and urge all Americans to observe November 6 through November 12, 2005, as National Veterans Awareness Week. I urge all Americans to recognize the valor and sacrifice of our veterans through ceremonies and prayers. I call upon Federal, State, and local officials to display the flag of the United States and to encourage and participate in patriotic activities in their communities. I invite civic and fraternal organizations, places of worship, schools, businesses, unions, and the media to support this national observance with commemorative expressions and programs.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of November, in the year of our Lord two thousand five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Armistice Day Becomes Veterans Day

@ 03:50 PM (30 months, 13 days ago)
World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice, which went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day, as November 11 became known, officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.

In 1968, new legislation changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date.

More on The History of Veterans Day

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919 , in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles , France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918 , is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m.

The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and
